Welcome graphic

I've had a continuing passion for Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings since i was very small, centered particularly on the Elven races of Middle Earth.  At the release of the recent Fellowship movie, the presence of the Elven culture was positively thrilling.  So, with my limited sewing knowledge, some not-overly-expensive fabrics from Wal-Mart (yes, i'm promoting Wal-Mart, for i favor their $1 a yard bin) and three different Simplicity Patterns (that each has an equivalent in other pattern brands) i endeavoured to create a costume for myself.

Elven garb tends to be ethereal, floaty, and rather androgenous--for elves are the Elder Race of Middle Earth.  Because they are in the Autumn of their days, the Third Age is ending, their colors are usually chosen in the autumnal vein--deep maroon reds, greys, dark greens, mossy colors, earthy browns (particularly those elves dwelling in Rivendell).  Lorien elves tend to wear lighter colored, lighter textured clothing.  The costumes i created work for a Rivendell Elf-maid, but could be adjusted to fit that of a Lorien Elf.

The basic costume (on top) is detailed on the "Many Layers Later" page.  The dress (bottom picture) which is more difficult to make and had some issues in its creation, is partially discussed in "Grey Matters"

The dress can be worn either in place of the grey-green underdress, or under the cloak by itself.  basically--whatever you feel is most elvish, and how cold is it outside!?  (:  just a word of warning.  these costumes are made of MUCH fabric, and are very warm.  so don't sit around in them outside, or you'll come out steamed.  Natural fabrics are better than synthetics, but you'll still be warm!

On the following pages you can find both a summary of what the costume is made from (a best guess thing, not a true name-the-fabric thing) and how i put it together.  Most of the pattern alterations can be found there as well.

I hope that you can derive some inspiration from them to create your own costume according to your personality.  Perhaps you're a Lorien Elf, or an Elven hunter/huntress?  Go exploring, and happy sewing!
